Gibson Les Paul & SG Upgrades
Even some of the better guitars can use a little tweaking here and there! Here are a couple of mods that can help to further improve upon the tone of your Gibson Les Paul or SG.
Gibson Les Paul Control Plate Upgrade
Certain vintage Gibson Les Pauls feature a "control plate" in the control cavity with long shaft pots. The control plate provides a common ground to all of the components and is the predecessor to the modern circuit boards found in current model Les Pauls.
The control plate aside, for many years Gibson Les Pauls were made with 300K Volume pots and teeny tiny ceramic disc tone capacitors - both of which SCREAM to be upgraded! The 300K Volume pots are the main reason why many Gibson guitars sound so dark and muddy...
Our Custom Shop upgrade features a pair of 500K Gibson audio taper Volume pots, a pair of Orange Drop .022uf tone capacitors and a new Switchcraft output jack as pictured here.
Brighten up your tone with this simple and cost-effective upgrade.

Gibson Les Paul & SG Circuit Board Upgrade
More recent Gibson Les Paul and SG models feature the "Quick Connect" circuit board with modular plugs and wiring so you can quickly remove and replace the toggle switch, output jack & pickups without the need for a soldering iron. Earlier versions of the circuit boards were built with 300K Volume pots and teeny tiny ceramic disc tone capacitors. The 300K Volume pots are the main reason why many Gibson guitars sound so dark and muddy…
Our Custom Shop Gibson Circuit Board upgrade features two 500K Gibson audio taper Volume pots and a pair of Orange Drop .022uf tone capacitors as pictured here.
Unlock the full potential and brighten up the tone of your guitar with this simple and cost-effective upgrade.

Gibson Les Paul Circuit Board Push/PUll Upgrade
Newer versions of the Gibson Les Paul circuit board (with the white 5-pin Quick Connect pickup connectors - but without push/pull pots) are ideal candidates for an upgrade of a different kind as the circuitry exists to allow for push/pull pots and the ability to coil-split the 4-conductor pickups already installed in your guitar! Our Custom Shop Circuit Board push/pull upgrade features two 500K CTS push/pull audio taper Volume pots and a pair of Orange Drop .022uf tone capacitors.
Unlock the full potential of your guitar - not to mention an expanded palette of single coil tones - with this simple and cost-effective upgrade.

Note: your circuit board must have the two unused solder pads located in front of each Volume control in order for this mod to work. This provides the necessary circuitry to allow for coil splitting. See SG note below for a workaround.
BTW, certain SG circuit boards (namely the newer boards with the white 5-pin Quick Connect sockets) can be upgraded to push/pull pots too, however it requires a permanent modification to the end of each pickup lead where the center tap wires are snipped at the Quick Connect plug, soldered together and spliced to an extension and rerouted to the push/pull pot. It ain’t pretty, but it works!
